A true innovation in joint testing
Innovations arise when good ideas intersect with a pragmatic practical environment. A recent example is the deployment of a remotely controlled forklift offered by the German logistics startup enabl. We jointly tested the capabilities of this technology in a pilot project.
A solution for one of the key challenges in intralogistics
Warehouses around the world are meeting the ever-growing customer demands for higher throughput volumes, faster turnaround times, and minimized error rates using all means of logistical artistry. This holds true in the realm of intralogistics as well. For instance, forklift drivers are often insufficiently available due to personnel shortages and significant fluctuations in warehouse turnover, making planning challenging. Hence, DB Schenker quickly took notice of enabl’s remote forklifts.
Futuristic surroundings for maximum control
The remote forklift was tested in Hildesheim/Germany over five intensive days. The technical and operational feasibility of the solution is beyond doubt after these tests. The forklift operator sits at a remote control station equipped with a steering wheel, pedals, control units, a monitor, and a headset – offering a 360-degree plus 180-degree view, providing not only a panoramic view but also an overhead perspective. From there, they maneuver the vehicle from any location while the forklift itself operates in a different logistics facility, executing maneuver commands in real time via a constant network connection. 
A spirit of innovation to serve our customers and employees 
This technology is innovative in several aspects. Firstly, it addresses personnel shortages and enables flexible workforce planning. Additionally, it enhances the working conditions of forklift drivers. A remote operator’s workstation can be designed to be healthier and more ergonomic than the seat within the vehicle itself, and it could also employ drivers with mobility impairments.

be one of the biggest advancements we have seen in decades.

Many processes will become much more efficient than they are today, thanks to software solutions that were only a dream a few years ago. But another important power of artificial intelligence lies in its ability 
to complement rather than replace human expertise. 

AI technologies have the potential to automate repetitive tasks, freeing up human experts to focus on higher-level strategic thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. 

This not only increases productivity but also enables humans to 
engage in tasks that require emotional intelligence, empathy, 
and critical thinking – qualities that machines cannot replicate. 

In some ways, the AI revolution will resemble the transition phase 
we experienced with the advent of the internet. Who still remembers 
visiting a public library to borrow books you had to read and study to 
obtain the information you needed? The internet and search engines have have made all this much easier and more efficient. AI solutions 
will further simplify these processes. 
Human authority always necessary 
Human oversight will nevertheless be crucial. While AI technologies 
can automate tasks and processes in logistics, human oversight 
remains critical. Even the best artificial intelligence systems are still 
unreliable in some cases. 

For critical decisions, humans should always have the final authority 
and be prepared to intervene when necessary. Despite all efforts, 
most AI systems are still prone to bias and prejudice due to the data they were trained on.

How has the working environment in the logistics industry evolved in recent years?
The logistics industry has undergone a significant evolution with the wider adoption of advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, and automation. There is a clear shift towards digitalization in both operations and management, coupled with an increasing emphasis on sustainability and green practices. The integration of data analytics is critical to optimize processes and increase overall efficiency and customer centricity.
Which key qualifications do you consider particularly important and what skills do today's workers need, especially as technology evolves?
Key qualifications that are particularly important for logistics workers include strong organizational skills, problem solving, customer management abilities, and effective communication skills. In addition, knowledge of supply chain management, inventory control, and transportation logistics is essential for the success in our field. But also more transferable skills like empathy, change affinity and being authentic and a good listener will set workers apart.

As technology continues to evolve, workers will need to focus on developing skills around digital literacy, including proficiency in using logistics software, data analysis tools, and automation technologies. Being adaptive and willing to learn new technologies will become an especially important competitive advantage for workers. These skills will become increasingly important to navigate the complexities of the industry, while at the same time retaining our unique culture and team spirit.
What are the hot topics in the changing world of work right now from an HR perspective?
From an HR perspective, hot topics in the changing world of work include promoting flexibility, enhancing employee well-being and mental health support, fostering diversity and inclusion initiatives, and developing solutions for effective remote work engagement, such as robust onboarding processes. These initiatives aim to adapt to evolving workforce needs and maintain a positive organizational culture. 
What would be your personal advice to someone starting in the logistics industry?
Be curious and open to what is ahead of you. The logistics industry is in a phase of global fundamental changes, not only around sustainability. And these changes open up so many opportunities to learn and gain experiences. Our industry is making things happening for the world, as we move goods from A to B. As the slogan says: #WeKeepEuropeMoving, and we are moving forward. The logistics industry is down to earth, with a highly ingrained customer-centric DNA. The enthusiasm and engagement of our people to make things happen for our customers is really inspiring and worth checking out. Working in diverse Teams that support each other is a key strength of DB SCHENKER. We live our one team one goal value every day.
